New Theme - Square

Square is a new Serendipity 1.1 theme inspired by the Design Observer - one of the many excellent design blogs out there in the ether.

Square is a 2 column, fixed width design with 2 sidebars on the right hand side. I've used the 'blockquote' element as a magazine style 'pullquote' as I feel this design lends itself to well to a magazine style blog or website. The menus are fully configurable in the admin interface for Serendipity 1.1 users and in the index.tpl for users of Serendipity v1.0 or less.

Select 'Square' in the tempate dropdown to take a look.

Yellowled on the Serendipity forum suggested I make the sidebars equal heights and extend them the full length of the page. This seemed like an excellent suggestion so I have implemented this in the theme and updated the zip. Thanks Yellowled - and thanks also to Carl for his helpful suggestions.

I really like this design Dave, and from your explanation I'd say this template meets all of your goals. Well done.

The blockquote is a really nice touch, and the slightly different color backgrounds in the sidebars really looks awesome.

Thanks Carl I'm pleased you like it. It's taken me some time to complete as I wanted to keep it simple.

Yellowled, on the S9Y forum, has suggested I extend the sidebars equally down to the footer. I think this is a good idea and it will improve the sidebars so I'm going to take a look at implementing it.

The blockquote 'pullquote' is something I've been thinking of doing for a while but I didn't have the right design to fit it into. This seemed to just suit it.

I don't think anyone would ever say this design was simple, probably business-like, but not simple

The easiest way of implementing the sidebar issue (especially since this seems to be afixed width template) would be to throw in a background image (faux columns) on your mainpane. If you wanted to add colorsets later you would need to provide additional backgrounds. I believe it might also be possible to do this with javascript, but I have no idea where to find the script.

Well, not so 'graphic' I guess I mean. It wasn't simple to do - especially to get it to work well in IE6!

I've done the background image in the sidebar wrapper which works very nicely thanks. I'll be posting an updated zip.

I'd really like the sidebars to extend to the very bottom of the page. At least in FF/Linux they stop right at the 'Add comment' line in the single entry page.

Have you tried to put #wrapper around #mainpane and #header/#navcontainer? I'm not sure, but it might work, if you use a similar positioning like in Eric Meyer's 'sliding faux columns' ... well, just a thought, it's not really necessary.

Hi Yellowled

I've implemented this and updated the zip in my download area. I put the background image into the mainpane instead of the header/sidebar wrapper. I had to add a couple of 'spacer' divs to the mainpane as it only contained floated elements and had no height.

Hi, nice theme. However, I found an error in style.css, making the lower part of it unparse:able by the browser, which made right-aligned images and stuff not work correctly. The problem was the a missing bracket :

I downloaded the theme from s9y, maybe the version you have here works better. Cheers!
